Sharing what I learn about masculinity and mental wellness

Hey there,

Welcome to The Thinking Log!

Me, Greg, 2023

This is me, Greg. This past December I got laid off from my tech job in Boston. This past January I moved to Wyoming to ski for the winter. And this past May I worked on a French farm for a month. Along the way, I found myself fascinated by masculinity & how it impacts my life. Weird right?

I think so too. So I鈥檝e created a brief interview with myself to help you understand why you鈥檙e reading this and what to expect from this blog in the future.

I hope you enjoy and I might also hope you subscribe!

So Greg, Why鈥檇 You Start a Blog? 馃檮

When I started going to therapy to unpack the figures of masculinity (my dad) in my life (more on that later), I realized that dudes like myself don鈥檛 know how to talk about their feelings. That鈥檚 a serious problem.

I believe the standards of masculinity no longer serve what it means to identify as a male and unfortunately, the data proves something is horribly wrong.

The suicide rate among males in 2021 was approximately 4x higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides.

So for the past two months, I鈥檝e been researching & interviewing therapists, college counselors, and male students to understand the challenges that male identified people face in todays world.

While I don鈥檛 have all the answers, I鈥檓 excited to share my findings and hope to spark a conversation about what can be done to get guys comfortable with their feelings. Hopefully we can work together to improve the state of men鈥檚 wellness and meaningful connection in our lives.

What is The Thinking Log? 馃

Well it鈥檚 a great double entendre, but that wasn鈥檛 on purpose.

The Thinking Log started my sophomore year of college. My friends and I were on a rainy walk in the woods when we stumbled upon this log (pictured below) that inadvertently provided us with a foundational place to gather, to laugh, to listen and to connect in a more meaningful way.

This blog is just the written representation of our experience on The Thinking Log.

What Can We Expect? 馃檪

Every Thursday you鈥檒l receive a new blog post from me related to masculinity.

Before you smash the unsubscribe button, masculinity is the umbrella term I鈥檒l use to explore my curiosity in loneliness, stigma, emotion, and what it means to gather as a community. All inputs that directly impact male mental well-being.

I do have an immense interest in music, skiing, and soccer so you might see some of that as well.

The goal of this blog is to learn a ton and to help others do the same.

Your feedback is always welcome, and if there鈥檚 a topic that you want to hear more about, please contact me!

I鈥檓 grateful (and stoked!) to have you here.

Talk soon,

Greg
